As a result of graduating from an Bachelor of Music program (Boston University in 1963) However, following that I was witnessing the liberal arts as a teacher (Brown University 1971-75) I'm a believer in education which integrates the study of arts alongside study of other fields. Not surprising for an ethnomusicologist (MA 1967, PhD at UCLA)! The ethnomusicology course I started at UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) is a good fit in a department of music in a College of Letters and Science. I enjoy pursuing multiple interests and seeing the big view. I love instructing both students in the undergraduate level (majors and non-majors) for whom I have written three textbooks-Music in India: the Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, as well as Music in Japan: Experiencing music, Experimenting with Culture) as well as graduate students. In between, I'll alternate between academic pursuits and administrative duties (I was Chair of the Department of Music from 1983 through 1988, and Dean of undergraduate Advising between 1992 and 1998, as well as Chair of the College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-1998, Chair of Group of Asian Studies from 1999, I am currently Chair of Department of Music).
